Link Google Business Profile to Google Analytics: A Guide for Trades

How builders and trades can link Google Business Profile to Google Analytics, understand the new reports and connect profile activity to genuine enquiries.

Trades business owner comparing Business Profile interactions with website enquiry data

Google now documents a direct link between Google Business Profile and Google Analytics. For builders, plumbers, electricians, roofers and renovation companies, it creates a convenient place to view profile interactions alongside website data.

That sounds like a complete local lead-tracking solution. It is not.

The link can bring useful Business Profile totals into Analytics, including website clicks, call-button clicks and direction requests. It cannot tell you whether a call connected, whether the customer wanted a service you provide or whether the enquiry became a quotation.

The practical value lies between those two extremes. Used properly, the integration reduces reporting friction and gives a trade business a clearer local-search baseline. Used carelessly, it can turn a collection of clicks into an inflated “lead” number.

This guide explains what the link provides, where its limits sit and how to connect the new report with genuine commercial outcomes.

Google’s new Business Profile and Analytics connection guide says a dedicated Google Business Profile collection appears in Analytics once a link exists.

The report can include aggregated totals for:

  • interactions
  • website clicks
  • calls
  • directions
  • messages
  • bookings
  • menus

Not every metric is relevant to every business. A roofing contractor may care about website clicks and calls but have no menu or booking-provider data. Google says Analytics displays every available Business Profile metric, whereas the normal profile performance view may hide metrics that do not apply to that business type.

This is reporting integration, not a local ranking feature. Linking the accounts does not make a profile more relevant, closer to a searcher or more prominent. If the profile itself needs attention, a structured Google Maps SEO review should examine eligibility, categories, services, reviews, photographs and website alignment before measurement is treated as the main problem.

What the report does not prove

Google’s separate explanation of Business Profile performance metrics defines calls as clicks on the call button and website clicks as clicks on the website link. Those are useful interactions, but their names can encourage stronger conclusions than the data supports.

A call-button click does not confirm that:

  • the phone call connected
  • somebody answered it
  • the caller was in the service area
  • the requested work suited the business
  • a survey or quotation followed

A website click does not confirm that the visitor read a service page, submitted a form or became a customer. A direction request may be commercially important for a showroom, merchant counter or public office, but less useful for a service-area builder whose address is hidden from customers.

The new Analytics collection also has several documented limits:

  • Business Profile metrics are available for the last six months.
  • If several profiles are linked, the report combines their totals.
  • Combined results cannot be filtered or segmented by individual profile.
  • The Business Profile metrics cannot be used in custom explorations, comparisons or filtered reports.
  • Linking shares all listed metrics rather than letting the owner choose individual data points.
  • Subproperties are not supported.

These constraints make the report suitable for an overview. They also mean it should not be sold internally as a complete attribution model.

Decide what you need to learn before linking

Start with a business question, not a dashboard.

A single-location electrician might ask whether profile interactions are moving in the same direction as qualified domestic and commercial enquiries. A builder may want to see whether more profile website clicks coincide with visits to extension and renovation pages. A multi-location plumbing company may need profile-level comparisons that the aggregated Analytics collection cannot provide.

Write down three layers of measurement:

  1. Profile interaction: a website click, call-button click, message or direction request.
  2. Enquiry: a connected call, completed project form, genuine email or WhatsApp conversation.
  3. Commercial outcome: a qualified enquiry, site visit, quotation or won project.

The definitions should fit the company. An emergency plumber may value a connected call immediately. A renovation firm with a longer sales process may care more about whether a detailed form becomes a site survey.

Our guide to qualified-enquiry tracking for builders explains how to record those later stages without treating every form or tap as equal. For phone-led firms, the practical call-tracking guide for builders and trades shows how to keep the profile number trustworthy while separating call-button clicks, connected calls and qualified enquiries. Professional lead-tracking support can then connect the reporting setup with the way the team actually handles enquiries.

Check the prerequisites and ownership

Google requires the person creating the connection to have an Editor or Administrator role on the Analytics property and Owner or Manager permission for the Business Profiles being linked.

Before proceeding, confirm:

  • the Business Profile is verified and represents the real company
  • the correct Analytics property receives data from the live website
  • the owner knows which profiles will be included
  • test or obsolete profiles are excluded
  • existing reports and definitions are recorded
  • somebody is responsible for reviewing the result

Permissions deserve care. Do not grant an outside supplier broader access merely because it is quicker. Give the minimum role needed for the agreed work, record who has access and remove old users when an engagement ends.

It is also worth checking the measurement foundation first. An SEO audit can identify missing tags, duplicate events, broken forms or inconsistent landing pages before a new data source makes the report busier.

Google’s documented process is short:

  1. Open Admin in the relevant Google Analytics property.
  2. Under Product links, choose Google Business Profile links.
  3. Select Link.
  4. Follow the prompts to choose the profile or profiles you manage.
  5. Review the data-sharing information and confirm the connection.

Once the link is active, a Google Business Profile collection should appear in the reporting area. A single Analytics property can be linked to more than one Business Profile.

Do not assume the setup is finished when the button has been clicked. Record the date of connection, the profiles selected and the baseline totals visible in the normal Business Profile performance report. Check again after data has had time to populate.

If the option is unavailable, verify permissions and make sure you are in the intended property. Do not create a duplicate Analytics property or Business Profile simply to force the menu to appear.

The direct connection reports Business Profile interactions. A tagged website URL can separately help Analytics identify sessions that arrived through the profile’s website link.

Google’s campaign URL guidance explains that UTM parameters are case-sensitive and appear in traffic-acquisition reporting. My recommended starting pattern for a normal Business Profile website link is:

https://www.example.co.uk/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=google-business-profile

Use a suitable landing page instead of the homepage where the profile represents a legitimate branch or a clearly distinct operation. The destination must still explain the real business accurately. A tracking tag is not a reason to send people to a thin town page or a page that does not match the profile.

Keep the naming convention simple and documented:

  • use lowercase throughout
  • keep the same source, medium and campaign spelling
  • avoid changing values each month
  • test that redirects preserve the full query string
  • never add campaign tags to internal website links

Internal UTM tags introduce new campaign values part-way through a visit. Google’s current campaign and traffic-source documentation says those values do not start a new GA4 session, but they can be associated with the events for which they were collected and affect event-based attribution. Use ordinary internal links between pages instead.

The tagged profile link and the direct account connection answer different questions. The account connection supplies aggregated profile interaction metrics. The tagged link helps analyse what website visitors did after selecting the profile’s website link. Neither proves a qualified lead by itself.

Measure the actions that matter on the website

After a profile visitor reaches the site, the landing page should make the next step clear. Useful service-page planning connects each important service with relevant proof, coverage, expectations and an appropriate contact route.

Measure successful actions rather than vague proximity to the contact form. Google’s guide to lead-generation key events recommends creating an event for the specific form that matters instead of treating every form submission on the website as a key event.

For a trade website, a practical measurement set might separate:

  • a completed project-enquiry form
  • a click on a telephone link
  • a click to WhatsApp or email
  • a confirmed connected call from call-tracking records
  • a qualified lead recorded by the office
  • a quotation or won project recorded later

Google also publishes recommended events for a lead-generation funnel, including generate_lead, qualify_lead, disqualify_lead, working_lead and close_convert_lead. A small contractor does not have to implement every event immediately. A maintained spreadsheet with the enquiry source, service, area and outcome is more valuable than an elaborate system nobody updates.

Website analytics technology can create privacy and consent obligations. The ICO’s cookies and similar technologies guidance should be considered alongside the site’s actual tags, consent mechanism and privacy notice. This article is a measurement guide, not legal advice.

Read the numbers as a sequence

Review the data as connected stages rather than one total:

Stage Useful measure What it still cannot prove
Profile visibility Views and search terms That the searcher considered the business suitable
Profile interaction Website clicks, call clicks, messages or directions That a genuine conversation happened
Website behaviour Landing-page visits and verified key events That the project fitted the business
Lead quality Suitable service, area, budget and timescale That a quotation or sale followed
Commercial outcome Survey, quotation and won project The full value of future referrals or repeat work

Look for consistent patterns over a meaningful period. Building and home-improvement demand can be seasonal, and a small number of valuable projects can make week-to-week percentages unstable.

Correlation also needs restraint. If profile interactions and enquiries both rise after new photographs, stronger reviews and revised service pages, the combined work may have helped. The report cannot isolate one cause unless the test was designed to do so.

Use content optimisation when the evidence points to a weak landing page or unclear offer. Use broader local SEO support when categories, reviews, profile information, locations and website content need to be aligned as one system.

A practical first-month routine

On setup day

  • record the profiles and Analytics property being linked
  • export or note the current profile performance baseline
  • apply and test a consistent tagged website URL
  • confirm the website landing page loads correctly on mobile
  • submit a test form and check that it arrives once

After the first full week

  • confirm the Business Profile reporting collection is present
  • compare profile website clicks with tagged website sessions
  • investigate large gaps before interpreting performance
  • test phone, form, email and WhatsApp routes again
  • remove staff and agency test interactions from business conclusions where possible

At the end of the first month

  • report profile interactions separately from enquiries
  • add qualification and quotation outcomes from the business record
  • compare service and location patterns with the previous baseline
  • record any tracking limitations or changes
  • choose one action for the next month

That action might be fixing a broken form, clarifying a service area, improving a landing page or collecting better project evidence. It should not automatically be “get more profile clicks”. More activity is useful only when it leads towards the work the business wants.

Accurate profile categories also affect what customers understand before they click. Use the Business Profile category guide for trades to separate business identity from services, and the trade photo planning guide to show genuine work without relying on unsupported ranking claims.

Final thoughts

Linking Google Business Profile to Google Analytics is a useful reporting improvement for trade businesses. It puts local profile interactions closer to website data and makes a monthly overview easier to maintain.

Its limitations are just as important as its benefits. The report contains aggregated activity, retains six months of Business Profile metrics and cannot segment multiple linked profiles individually. A call-button click is still not a connected call, and a website click is still not a qualified enquiry.

Link the correct accounts, label the website link consistently, verify the important website actions and keep a simple record of lead quality and commercial outcomes. That creates a measurement chain the business can use: from profile interaction, to website journey, to real project opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does linking Google Business Profile to Analytics improve rankings?

No ranking benefit is stated in Google’s documentation. The connection is a reporting feature that brings Business Profile metrics into Google Analytics.

How much Business Profile history is available in Analytics?

Google says the linked Business Profile metrics are available for the last six months, even when a longer Analytics date range is selected.

Can I compare several branches separately in the new report?

Not within the linked Business Profile collection. Google says metrics from multiple linked profiles are summed and cannot be filtered or segmented by individual profile. Keep profile-level exports or another suitable reporting process if branch comparison matters.

They remain useful when you want to identify website sessions from the profile link and analyse what those visitors do on the site. Keep the values consistent and do not use UTM parameters on ordinary internal links.
